The shaft seal not only needs to be able to work effectively at high circumferential speeds, but also must have a certain degree of flexibility to adapt to the possible axial movement of the rotor

At present, the shaft seals of oil-free screw compressors mainly include graphite ring type, labyrinth type and mechanical type.
The seal ring of the graphite ring type shaft seal is made of graphite with a low friction coefficient. As graphite has good self-lubricating properties, there is no hindrance even if the graphite ring is in contact with the journal. In order to ensure the strength andmake the thermal expansion rate of the ring hole the same as the thermal expansion rate of the rotor shaft material, a steel support ring is often installed on the sealing ring. However, this type of shaft seal requires a small amount of lubricating oil to flow across the sealing surface, and this lubricating oil may be mixed into the compressed gas. If the compressed gas does not allow such a small amount of pollution, it is necessary to open an oil drain groove between the shaft seal and the compressor cavity. It should be noted that at the working speed of an oil-free screw compressor, the work consumed is comparable when a mechanical seal with oil lubrication is used.
In many occasions, the frictional power consumption of a single shaft seal can reach several kilowatts. In an oil-free screw compressor, four shaft seals are used, so the power consumption of the shaft seal must be considered.
It is worth noting that although the oil-free screw compressor is not sensitive to the liquid contained in the compressed gas, if a large amount of liquid enters the oil-free screw compressor for a long time, the only thing that needs attention is the shaft seal.
